Jinda Home of Safety is a
registered NGO (article 21 company) situated in the north eastern province of Mpumalanga in South Africa.
Jinda’s primary function is the care and placement of AIDS orphans into
a stable and loving family environment. Each home is headed by a foster
mother who has been carefully selected and screened by a registered and
qualified Social Worker. The children and mothers are monitored by
Jinda on a daily basis, keeping in touch with all aspects of their
progress and wellbeing. Jinda
currently consists of:
- a
children’s village of 12 houses, capable of comfortably housing up to
60 children
- a
crèche / day-care centre
- pre-school
- soup
kitchen
| Latest statistics estimate the number of
orphaned children in sub Saharan Africa at 16.6 million (UNAIDS Nov
2010). There is an overwhelming need to help, feed, and house these
children who are otherwise destined to live a destitute life. Jinda has
been involved with feeding, caring and placing orphaned children with
foster mothers for the last 33 years. |
| Nestled in the Barberton mountains,
our aim is to build a children’s village – a safe haven for orphaned
children where they can live and learn. There are currently 12 houses
with a capacity of 4-6 children and 1 mother in each house. Many of the
houses are in desperate need of renovation and are not yet ready to be
lived in. There is also no hot water in the village, and the need for a
full time social worker dedicated to this organisation is becoming more
apparent. |

Bongani has
been an inspiration to us all. He came to us 3 years ago when his
father died of AIDS. We were contacted by his father the night before
he died, but he was too weak to speak to us about his children.
Bongani's mother is an alcoholic and a glue addict, and had
abandoned her children altogether. Bongani was introduced into one of
Jinda's homes run by a foster mother who has been screened and approved
by a qualified Social Worker. He has since developed a strong bond with
his foster mother and his positivism and exuberance inspire us to do
more.
